Teaching Experience & Reflection
Beginning my role as an environmental educator I was familiar with our lesson plans and the knowledge that we are using to educate our students. I was lucky enough to have my first experience as an environmental educator teaching an amazing group of students who were already familiar with, and passionate about the subject I was teaching. As my role as an instructor continued I found myself sometimes struggling to adapt to teaching with different groups of students. A lot of this required me to develop my understanding of my students backgrounds and cater my presentation of materials so that the students would find it interesting and memorable. This required me to be patient and take a problem solving style approach with each new group of students. None are the same as any others and it required me to build rapport and change tactics each day that I stepped into the field to teach. This was a great experience for me to break down preconceptions that I had about my role as an instructor and to become fluid in my approach and broaden my arsenal of teaching tools. Every time I stepped into the field I would have a new group of students with new backgrounds and experiences. Thus requiring me to not just be the same teacher every time. Overall my ability to adapt has improved tremendously and as a result my students seemed to have learned their information and internalized our lessons effectively. This could be shown in our assessment of what students have learned in our post trip lessons. My team 4-6 times had the highest scores in our assessment, and the other 2 times had the second highest scores. Thus showing that my growth into an instructor that changes tact depending on my students, was effective in catering education to each group that came my way.
